How to Prepare Your Quilt
Follow these three steps to ensure your quilt is ready for quilting.
1. Prepare Your Quilt Top
- Check for squareness and ensure the quilt top is square and even.
- Stitch edge seams; sew around the perimeter if heavily pieced.
- Remove loose threads, especially dark threads on light fabrics.
- Smooth borders and center of waves or excess fullness that may cause puckering.
- Add buttons, lace, and decorations after quilting.
- Iron and flatten seams and smooth the top. A $50 fee applies if ironing is needed.
- Fold your quilt top gently and hang it on a hanger for transport.
2. Select Your Batting
Batting must be 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top, providing 4 inches of extra fabric on each side. Your batting must be purchased from Marietta's Quilt & Sew.
For best results, we recommend Dream Cotton or Warm & Natural batting.
3. Select Your Backing Fabric
Backing must be 10 inches wider and 10 inches longer than your quilt top, providing 5 inches of extra fabric on each side.
- Ensure the backing is square.
- Choose from our 108-inch wide-back fabrics or piece your own backing.
- When piecing, remove selvages from seam allowances but leave them on the outer edges for frame stability.
- Press thoroughly and hang the backing separately from your quilt top.
