In the class you will use a graduated series of body motion, tracing, drawing and quilting exercises, to build skill upon skill, pattern upon pattern as you embed the muscle memory and eye-hand coordination needed for comfortable free-motion quilting. We will quilt three blocks that you can finish into a wall hanging as shown here, or add them to more blocks at home to finish a complete quilt as shown in the in Free-Motion Mastery in a Month book.
You will see an instant improvement in your free-motion quilting skills as you learn how to:
- Pre-train your hands anytime, anywhere, before quilting
- Set up a domestic sewing machine for free-motion quilting
- Quilt the 6 Basic Shapes that make up all quilting designs
- Build any quilting design from the 6 Basic Shapes
- Join pre-quilted blocks to make a quilt of any size
- And much more!
Required items to bring:
- sewing machine with power cord and foot control (note - your machine must have the option to lower the feed dogs or set the stitch length to zero to prevent the feed dogs from advancing the fabric
- basic sewing tools (scissors, seam ripper, etc.)
- at least 2 full bobbins
- high-quality 50 weight cotton thread
- needles (75/11, 80/12, 90/14 “Universal’ and “Quilting” styles)
- free motion quilting foot or darning foot
- 1/4" foot (may not need this in class, but you will need it to assemble the quilt afterwards)
IMPORTANT: Students are expected to already be familiar with the operation of their sewing machine including how to load bobbins with thread, how to change the bobbin, how to thread the machine, change the needle, lower the feed dogs, change the foot, etc. Please ensure your machine is cleaned, lubricated and working properly BEFORE coming to class. Make sure you have a free-motion quilting foot and know how to attach it. Prior to class, ensure your free motion foot allows the fabric to move freely between the foot and the feed dogs. If not, speak to someone in the store to resolve the issue BEFORE the day of the class.
Please arrive at 9:30am on the morning of the class to set up your machine. Class will begin at 10am sharp.
Lunch will be provided. Class will end at 4:30pm.
