Class Mandala-Bag In The Hoop Embroidery (Beginners) **May**

In an effort to keep classes affordable, we are requesting that you purchase all supplies and materials from Marietta’s Quilt & Sew.
10% off on all class supplies

Learn how to make a cute zipper bag in your embroidery hoop! Download the embroidery pattern from Kreative Kiwi (click here). Be sure to download the format that works for your machine (Babylock/Brother use PES, Janome uses JEF, and Bernina uses EXP).

This design offers lots of variations; once you learn the process, it’s super simple to dress it up or down and have a bag for every occasion.  Experiment  with different fabrics or different threads, including metallics and variegated threads. We will be stitching the version of the bag that includes the flap.

Please note that you need an embroidery machine with a 5x7” minimum hoop size for this project. The bigger the hoop, the bigger your finished bag can be.

Supplies:

  •          No-show mesh stabilizer (Click here)
  •          Several sturdy straight pins—T-pins work great
  •          ¼ yard batting (a scrap 9”x17” will work, if you have one)
  •          ⅓ yard fabric off the bolt for the outside and strap—prepare the strap before you come to class
  •          Fusible interfacing for strap (2¼”  x strap length)
  •          ¼ yard off the bolt or 1 fat quarter for the lining.
  •          Thread—two colors, one for the mandala (contrast with your fabric), and the other for the background (blend with your fabric)
  •          Nylon coil zipper (12” minimum, single slide).
  •          Masking tape or painter’s tape

Homework:

  •          You will get an email before class.  PRINT THE PDF INCLUDED IN THE EMAIL and bring it to class.
  •          Save the embroidery files to a USB.  There will be TWO files for each hoop size, one for the bag and the other for the flap. YOU WILL NEED BOTH. (NOTE: **The 8x10 hoop BAG will use the 8x8 hoop FLAP file.**)
  •          Cut and label the pieces according to the instructions that come with the embroidery file. Use the dimensions that are written for your hoop. (Example: 8x10” hoop uses 9x11” pieces) PLEASE CUT THE PIECE FOR THE BACK OF THE BAG OUTSIDE 1” LONGER THAN THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR EASIER ASSEMBLY.
  •          Make your strap before class:

o   Cut a 2½” width-of-fabric strip for your strap.

o   Iron your interfacing to the wrong side.

o   Fold in half and press a crease down the length of the strap.

o   Fold the raw edges into the crease and press again.

o   Edge stitch on both long sides. You will end up with a long, narrow strap that you can trim to a comfortable length.
